DANIEL DIERMEIER: Good evening. My name is Daniel Diermeier. I am the Provost of the University of Chicago. And it's my great pleasure to welcome you to the Logan Center here tonight. I am thrilled to welcome the Rosenberger winner, Kerry James Marshall, to the Logan and to the University of Chicago.
He was awarded the Rosenberger medal in 2016 to honor his work in the field of painting and his contribution to Chicago. We were also honored Kerry conducted a master class here this afternoon with our students and with our artists in residence. I'd like to thank everybody who participated to make this evening possible today, especially the Office of Universal Events and Ceremonies, the Department of Visual Arts, the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, and, of course, the Logan Center faculty and staff for organizing today's event https://oncasinogames.com/citadel-casinos/.
I'd also like to acknowledge Jackie Stewart, professor in the Department of Cinema Media Studies at the college who will be joining Kerry James Marshall for question and answer periods later in the lecture. And now it's my great pleasure to welcome Jessica Stockholder, the Raymond W. and Martha Hilpert Gruner Distinguished Service Professor and chair of the Department of Visual Arts to introduce Kerry James Marshall. Thank you. [APPLAUSE] JESSICA STOCKHOLDER: Hi.
My pleasure to be here to introduce Kerry James Marshall. In 2016, we at the University of Chicago were thrilled to name him as the recipient of the Rosenberger Medal, given for outstanding achievement in the creative and performing arts. This evening, he's going to deliver a talk titled, "As Luck Would Have It." Marshall was born in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama.
He grew up in South Central Los Angeles and studied there at the Otis Art Institute where in 1978 he earned his BFA and in '99 an honorary doctorate. And he just told me this evening that he as of today has another honorary doctorate at SAIC. Marshall moved to Chicago. [APPLAUSE] Yes.
Marshall moved to Chicago over 30 years ago. And he taught at UIC for many years where he garnered a reputation for being an outstanding educator, which I heard ripples of on the East Coast long before I moved here. And at that same time, over those years, he produced the extraordinary body of work that he's now known so widely for.
Over the years, Marshall's work has been featured in more prominent institutions than I can reference, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Secession in Vienna, the Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. In 2014, Marshall was the recipient of the Wolfgang Hahn Prize, an award given annually by the Gesellschaft fur Moderne Kunst at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. In 2013, he was one of seven new appointees named to President Barack Obama's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. In 1997, he received a MacArthur Foundation Grant, and in '91, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 2007, Art Forum noted that Marshall was the star of documenta 12, the renowned international survey of contemporary art that takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. His work has been profiled in numerous international art magazines and journals. And there have been many monographic publications dedicated to his work. His work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art here, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery in Washington DC, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Whitney Museum in New York. In the wake of his mind altering retrospective, which many of us here in Chicago were privileged to see last year as it originated at the Art Institute before traveling to the Met Breuer in New York City and then to the LA Museum of Contemporary Art. It was at the MCA, right?
Hello, today I’m gonna be covering 5 tips to improve the amount of resources you can get every day. Resources are one of the major aspects for your development, as they allow you to upgrade your buildings, complete research, and of course, train your army. The underlining key factor of this video will be a variety of all the different possible ways you can obtain resources, something you should always keep in mind when playing GoG.
Keep in mind they are the major points in my opinion. Any of this might change depending on your gameplay style and the amount of time you can play every day. So with that said, let’s get started. 1/- Killing beasts It’s important to kill a few beasts every day On top of the experience points, materials, component and designs that you will loot, they will also drop random resources packages that go straight into your Inventory. This is the ideal situation because they are protected all the time, and you can use them whenever you need them. Here are few things you need to keep in mind with beasts: The higher the level, the higher the amount of resources you can get, but also the higher the amount of stamina is consumed.
Their levels will vary between 1 and 30. You won’t lose troops in these battles, however a few might get wounded. 2/- Rallying Red Guard Camps Rallying a Red Guard Camp is also a key PvE feature of the game. It will provide more loot than regular beasts.
The amount of resources you get depends on the Guard you kill and the percentage of damage you inflict in the battle, so it’s important to send your strongest army when attacking one. Just like beasts, there are important points to know before attacking Red Guard Camps. Killing Red Guards will use 20 points of stamina. You can only attack Red Guards through a rally, meaning you will need allies to do so. You can only get Wood or Food from Red Guards as a resource.
You can expand the Red Guard Captain to discover their camp formation. If you carry a key you will get an extra chest for each victory. 3/- Daily Rewards Daily quests offer you a large number of small tasks to complete every day in exchange for reward chests. One of every two reward chests will offer you resources. So the more chests you open per day, the more resources you can get. This one is pretty simple as you will naturally complete some of these tasks every day.
However, I recommend you check at the end of the day to see if you’re close to the next chest, and if so, you can complete extra tasks for additional rewards. 4/- Check your surroundings If you’re like me, then you like to scroll around the map near you, you might just spot an abandoned City around. When scouting them, you can see what resources are up for grabs and can be looted by attacking the player. A good way to get resources is to find a few of these targets around you and attack them once a day or once every 2 days depending on their resource production.
5/- City features I decided to regroup all these features into one point as all of them can be done from your City interface. Let’s check these features inside your City that will let you get extra resources every day. 1/- Talents If you check your Talent interface, the Economy one offers a Talent ability that only requires 16 points to unlock. This will instantly harvest 5 hours worth of resource production from all your resource buildings. Logically this makes a lot of sense. Spending those 16 Talent Points will have a huge long term affect in your resource collection.
2/- Munitions exchange Based on the Building level you can trade a good amount of resources every day. Make sure to do it daily as the number of munitions available gets reset at the beginning of each day. 3/- Designs This one is small, but it’s still good to know. If you follow the first tip (which was killing beasts), you might end up with a good amount of designs that are completely useless for your current build. From your Forge building you can exchange these Designs for Wood.
It’s always useful if you’re short of Wood. 4/ Astrologer This one is available from your Inn. I kind of like the Astrologer, because you can get Sooth Stones pretty easily.
You can easily get all types of resources based on your Castle level. Also, the Tarot game will let you get resources based on the different rewards available. Make sure to spin it a few times a day, otherwise you will end up with too many Sooth Stones. 5/- Market Stall Check right in front of your stairs in the Bargain Center, in here you can trade resources for different resources, among other deals. For instance, all resources trade labelled with “premium” are really worth it, since you will exchange a small amount of Food, Wood or Gold for a higher amount of resources.
I tend to click on all the free available ones every day. You can also use it if you’re looking for one resource in particular. I hope what I covered today was in some way useful to you. If you wish to get more tips for any topics, including PvP, Rally, Airship, Events, anything, leave a note in the comment section below.
Thank you guys for watching, I hope to see you in game soon!
This is the fallacy. The previous flips do not influence the next one. This flip still has a 50-50 chance.
Falling into this fallacy is easiest on games of pure chance like Roulette. If the table rolls red five times in a row, people will start placing bets on black because it’s bound to hit. When in truth, every roll is independent and can still hit red. What happened in the past does not influence what will happen in the future. Another rather fun thing to watch in the casino is the slot machines. That’s where you will find the majority of the old ladies with their fanny packs.
They aren’t playing though. They’re watching all those silly 21 year olds throwing away their money. Why are they just standing there watching? Because they’re waiting for that birthday girl to lose enough times that she gives up and walks away – so then the old lady can take her spot. She believes that the feeding schedule of the slot machine has been run up and it is due for a payout.
If only that naïve college girl had stuck it out just a little longer. Believing that a machine is due is no different that thinking red or tails bound to hit. Nothing the previous player did will effect what the next player gets.
But even people who work in casinos and know these things find themselves eventually believing in superstitions – Yes, I truly believe in beginner's luck. Oh okay. Oh my god, I've never seen anything like it, it's uncanny. . You may think these things are just confined to the four walls of the casino or at least to the gambling or superstitious world.
And you couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone participates in this, even you. It’s part of the psychological theory known as the illusion of control. The tendency of people to overestimate their ability to control events. You may scoff at that idea, but you very likely participate in ritual as well.
This may be for luck or for some sort of practical purpose: Whether it be a pre-game stretching routine, prayer, specific meal. These are all rituals. Before every game of thrones episode I participate in my own little ritual. I watch the previous episode while making whatever junk food I’ll be having for dinner. I will shut off the internet and silence my phone because that’s the only way to avoid spoilers and then enjoy. That is ritualistic behavior.
That part doesn’t really make it seem like I have any sort of control over the events of the show though. That’s where “quasi-magical thinking” comes in. This is when you know your actions don’t affect the outcome, but you do them anyway. Like when you shout “no!” at the TV when your favorite character is about to die. Or you close your eyes and wish before you open what you hope to be an acceptance letter from a university.
You know that your actions aren’t going to go back months and change the Dean or the writer’s mind. But you do it anyway for sort of cosmic comfort that you have some sort of control. Or at least that there is something out there that does have control and you can ask for its help. And that is the overarching point of superstitions. Trying to figure out the rules of this random universe so that we can all feel like we have some sort of control or understanding of it. Truth is, none of us have the answers.
None of us have control. And nobody we ask can change the cosmic feeding schedule for us. So the next time you wish upon a falling star, toss a coin into a fountain, or break a mirror, fear not, nothing is going to happen, because now, you know better. Hey guys if you learned anything from this episode, go ahead and give that like button a click, and if you’d like to see more from me, I put out new videos every weekend so go ahead and give that subscribe button a tickle. If you don’t, a dead girl will rise from your local cemetery and haunt you for the next five years.
Also, I’ve almost hit 250 subscribers, and in addition to doing a few challenges, I figured I’d give you all the opportunity to ask me some questions about the channel or any of the content I’ve made so far so leave those down in the comments – I’ll try to do a more personal Q&A some time in the future. But in the meantime if you’d like to watch one of my older videos, how about this one?
One of our two-part series on the top 10 tips for beginning blackjack players in this first part we're going to talk all about what kinda blackjack games.
You should avoid and then we'll talk about some other table etiquette involved later on. In part, two we'll talk some more about table etiquette and then finish up with some advice and how to use the proper strategies. So, if you're already learned about blackjack, let's begin number one, don't play 625 blackjack games. Traditionally, blackjack games are paid 322.
Whenever a player is dealt the Blackjack, however, in recent years some casinos have reduced that payoff from three to two to only six to five, which results in a lower win for the players as an example, if you bet ten dollars and get a blackjack 322 payoff, Would be fifteen dollars, while the 625 payoff would be only twelve dollars? This result in a much higher mathematical edge for the casino, and you should avoid these games.
As a matter of fact, by just making this one change in the payoff for Black Jacks, the casinos can raise their advantage by over 300 percent. So once again make sure you avoid the 625 blackjack games. Number two don't play at tables that use a continuous shuffling machine.
Traditionally, once all the cards have been played either that the other or an automatic shuffling machine will shuffle the cards before they are put back into play with a continuous shuffling machine navigate to this website.
However, there is no break in play because the discarded placed directly into the continuous shuffling machine, which will keep shopping cart after every and display end result, is that more hands will be played per our and on average you will lose more money simply because you're playing More hands and one more thing: if you want to count cards, then for sure you want to avoid these games because card counting won't work against the continuous shelling machine. Number three check the table minimum before you sit down. If you're a ten dollar blackjack player, you don't want to mistakenly sit at a twenty five dollar. Minimum bet table so be sure to check the table minimum before you sit down. There will always be a placard or sign at each table that shows the minimum bet for that table so be sure to look for tbe, for you sit down number four, don't answer in the middle of a shoe game.
If it's not allowed, some blackjack tables have a sign that says no Michu entry, and that means once the first Carter doubt you can't make a bet and to all the cards in the shoe have been dealt out and I knew she was put into play.
If you ask the casino why they have this role, probably say it for the convenience of their players, so they aren't bothered by new players and a ranked game until the shoot was finished. But the real reason is to stop card counters. What are the methods card counters can use is to stand at the table without betting and watch the Carters they're being played once the county's favorable.
They can then jump in with a big bat.
However, within no Michu entry roll the card counters are prevented from doing this. So before you jump into a game, that's already in progress be sure to check if it's allowed at that particular table number five, don't hand your money directly to the dealer. When you for sit down at a blackjack table, you need to exchange for cash for chips, but don't had your money directly to the dealer.
Casinos, don't want players and dealers in direct contact with each other, because there could be collusion to steal chips. Therefore, you should place your money on the table in front of your bedding box that the other will then take it and spread it out on the table to count it out then slide the corresponding number of chips to you, but don't touch the chips into the Dealer removes his hat this procedure issues so that the overhead security cameras can see the transaction and make sure that it was handled properly. That'S it for part, one of our video on the top 10 tips for beginning blackjack players.
Don'T forget that impart to we'll talk. Some more about table etiquette and then finish up with some advice and how to use the proper strategies. Don'T forget that you can see more of our educational gaming.
In one such section, the author builds the case about thinking power stating that thinking power is more important than intelligence and further talks about putting good use of thinking capability to get ahead.
The book does fair amount of justice to touch on various softer and harder aspects in equal proportions. The book has sections to discuss about creative solution thinking, making your attitude your allies, managing work environment, getting into the action habit, thinking right towards people and finally about developing the leadership habits. This book is very helpful and full of advice, so I am writing my essay about it.
In the words of Dr. David Schwartz,
“ Remind yourself once again that you are not pulled to high levels of success. Rather, you are lifted there by those working beside and below you.”
My personal favourite section from the book is- Think right towards people.
Some of the best nuggets of information I have found from the book:
Saint Tropez is a delightful French commune that attracts many visitors. A budget Saint Tropez travel vacation is associated with fun, frolic and plenty of well-spent leisure time. It depends on the destination, the various attractions and facilities available and the affordability of the chosen destination. Proper planning results in a relaxing holiday and rejuvenated spirits.
An important budget Saint Tropez detail to be considered is the strength of the family, including the number of children and adults.
The next detail is budget Saint Tropez accommodation. It should meet all the basic levels of comfort desired and expected and then a luxury, to make the stay enjoyable. Guests can choose from the various rental services offered in each of the destinations, by choosing and booking online or through travel agents. It is advisable to get the reservation done through travel agents, as sometimes it involves a lot of running around and tension.
Also, when choosing the hotel or resort, tourists should look for Saint Tropez travel all-inclusive packages, which include cruising, meals and entertainment. This helps in saving a lot of money. Visitors are advised to go through the package deals carefully before paying and get definite information on the add-ons. These packages help in making the holiday more enjoyable, without having to worry about the small details and their arrangements.
Most of the resorts offer seasonal and nonseasonal budget Saint Tropez travel discount offers. It is beneficial to plan a holiday when the offers are available. Once the difficult task of choosing a holiday destination is over, the next task is to agree on the accommodation that best fits in the budget. It is an important detail that requires research and careful consideration.
Many resorts offer discount rates, weekend discounts and special family packages at select periods of the year. It is advisable to avail of budget Saint Tropez travel facilities to make the trip economical.
It is not always wise to go by the rates offered online or in brochures, as they keep changing. It is helpful to contact the property owner and speak about the rates and offers personally, before making the budget Saint Tropez travel destination. Some resorts offer low rates but conceal hidden, additional charges and apply rigid cancellation charges. Sometimes a membership with selected magazines and websites can help to save a considerable percentage of the rental charges. This can be used for planning a family vacation in specific hotels and resorts. Coupons are also available at times, in local stores and shops, offering great value-packages to families.
Most of these budget Saint Tropez travel rental services offer luxurious amenities and additional facilities to make the stay comfortable. They charge a refundable security deposit along with the accommodation charges and have to be booked well in advance during peak seasons, to ensure availability. Cancellation charges and conditions may vary depending on the reputation and policy of the hotel. In the case of pets, it is advisable to find out the additional charges levied and inform the hotel authorities about the accompanying pet.
